October 1st (tomorrow) marks the start of International Walk to School month. Primary schools across the UK are joining with children in more than 40 countries across the globe to celebrate the benefits of walking to school.
Walking to school should be a safe and healthy exercise and most certainly our children need just that. Let elected representatives…MPs and local Councillors know you want more walking buses and safer pavements for all pedestrians.
I hope local schools will be joining in; I will certainly encourage them to do so. 81% of parents of today’s schoolchildren walked to school but now less than half of primary school children do so. Is is any wonder the current generation show such signs of obesity and general physical decline ? Please encourage more walking in our young people. It will of course benefit them, but also reduce the impact of school run traffic jams with associated air pollution. It all makes good sense.
