Liberal Democrat District Councillor for Buckland and Milber Learn more

Today, so far…..

by admin on 21 September, 2016

I can recall my late father often questioning what I did as a councillor. He had a close friend who happened to be a Conservative Councillor in the home town, who according to dad,”went to a meeting perhaps once a month, if that, and that was it”. I have no way of knowing if that was true, but as a fairly typical day I thought I would just list some of the council related issues raised with me so far today,( and it’s only 1.30 pm!) to give an idea of what this councillor gets involved with on a daily basis….as you can see, it’s never boring, and no two days are ever the same. Having spent the last two days in meetings, I am pleased to be back “at the coal face”, dealing with human beings and human problems.
Two queries re vermin; 2 complaints about weeds growing in or on pavements and gullies (Town Quay and Aller); one concern about mobility scooters not being able to get from Ogwell to Newton town centre; signage at the roundabouts on SDH, particular referencing lack of direction signs to Aller and Newton Abbot; enquiry about Superfast Broadband £500 voucher scheme; farmers subsidy; lack of street lighting College Road; parking spaces at The Point Car Park Teignmouth not big enough; litter on A380; cycle sign on path from Addison Road to Penn Inn wrong. That is a list of things I can instantly recall from this morning. It doesn’t include my own business/family related issues, which I will spare you!
I got into a conversation with a resident mid morning, who asked if I enjoyed what i do. Big question, with a potentially long answer. However, briefly…Yes I do, very much, but as I said to the questioner “I have been in and out of control and while in control is much harder work and even more time consuming, it’s a lot more fun, a lot more satisfying.”
