Another Good Days Campaigning Comes to an End

by admin on 29 April, 2017

The Devon County Council elections are due on Thursday next. It seems to have been a long campaign, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I really enjoy meeting residents and talking through issues, so campaigning is always a pleasure as far as I am concerned.
Today I have been on both sides of Newton Abbot and the reception has been really very positive everywhere I’ve been. OK, understandably on a Bank Holiday Saturday with the sun shining quite a number were out, but I am hugely encouraged by the reaction from those who were in. Lots of concern about the impact of Conservative Party cuts in services and a realisation that if they are re elected then it will be a green light to them to continue undermining public services, schools, the health service, and a further deterioration of our roads.
It appears that support for the Labour Party is even less than previously, and it’s never been a realistic option here in Devon. Mr Corbyn does not seem to be held in high regard by any one that I have met. I am sure he is a principled man, but doesn’t seem able to lead ducks to water.
I am pleased to note that few admit to supporting UKIP, but then I suppose that was always the case. UKIP supporters are obviously embarrassed by their attitudes, and while prepared to vote in the secrecy of the polling booth seem reluctant to come out on the doorstep and declare. I imagine some former UKIP voters will drift back to the Conservatives.
With us entering the final stages of the local election campaign I am truly grateful and appreciative of all the promises of support; I am hopeful, but by no means remotely complacent, both for myself and fellow Newton Abbot candidate Jackie Brodie. It would be so good if two Lib Dems living in the town were elected next Thursday. How much better than one local councillor living in France!
What is also hugely encouraging is the significant increase in party membership, both locally and nationally. We have had approximately 20 new members here in Newton Abbot in the last 5 or 6 days which is unprecedented. One tore up his Labour Party membership card and joined the Lib Dems all in the matter of a few minutes….now that’s encouraging!!!
