Underpass Flooding

by admin on 30 November, 2018

This problem was reported last weekend when it was first brought to my attention by local residents and Town Cllr. Mike Joyce. County Highways attended and repaired one of the two pumps that are in place to cope with a high water table. Problems are often compounded by a high tide and, as was experienced last weekend and most of the week, very heavy rain. The repaired pump soon packed up again and more recently other attempts to repair appear to have been unsuccessful.
I have more recently contacted the Head of Service at County Hall to point out that the situation has not only not been resolved but has become life-threatening, in that some, mainly children, are running across the main road to reach the other underpass. This is highly dangerous and silly.
In the short term, a temporary mobile pump will be in place either over the weekend or in the early part of next week. It appears likely that if repairs are not possible, then new pumps will need to be obtained, which is not a cheap option. I will continue to press for early resolution of the breakdown but can assure all that the authority is well aware and have been in regular attendance trying to resolve the problem.

Diversion signs at the traffic lights, where pedestrians can safely cross, would have helped in this situation. When a pedestrian has reached the entrance to the subway and only then discovers that it is closed there are no viable options that don’t include backtracking a considerable distance. Many people won’t even know where they need to go to safely access the subway.
