Government Cash for Cycleways Appreciated

by admin on 10 May, 2020

Yesterday the Government announced a considerable and very welcome sum of money for the construction of cycle and pedestrian ways. It may well be of course that with the fast-approaching depression many will be reduced to walking and cycling, but that would be a pessimistic view, as both walking and cycling are, of course, activities much enjoyed and beneficial for healthy exercise in their own right.
I welcome this thinking by Government, whatever their motives, and sincerely hope Devon gets a fair share of any cash allocation.
As soon as I heard the announcement I immediately contacted the relevant officer at County Hall to ask him to do all in his power to ensure we received a % and reminded him ( he didn’t actually need any reminding) that Devons greatest cycleway need was for investment to complete the link between Newton Abbot and Teignmouth.
While he wasn’t able to give any guarantee of that, I was impressed that he was answering my emails on a Saturday evening!
Here’s hoping…I would love to see the land necessary acquired and real progress made with what will be a major tourist and economic boost this area.

Dear Councillor Hook, with regards to recent Government announcement, I would be glad to finally see some progress and hopefully eventual conclusion to the ongoing saga of the extension of the path for both cyclists and walkers from The Passage Inn to Bishopsteignton. For one thing it would take cyclists of the hilly bends on the existing road for the safety of all travellers and benefit walkers that are not able toor restricted by tide levels to walk along the estuary.
    Yours failthfully, Ian Daws Bishopsteignton

Yes, I am very keen to see the cycleway from Moretonhampstead to Teignmouth( and beyond to Dawlish of course) completed. I would like to think this would be in time for me to still be young and fit enough to use it!I’m not holding my breath for instant positive action, but I have received assurances that Devon CC are still keen to complete, and anticipate a planning application being submitted ” later this year”.
