20MPH WANTED “EVERYWHERE” IN DEVON…ALL WAITING FOR NEWTON ABBOT

by admin on 13 October, 2021

Slightly embarrassing debate at County Council last week regarding calls for 20 mph speed limits from just about everywhere in Devon. Numerous councillors representing all parts of the county spoke passionately about their residents’ strong desire to have 20 mph speed limit in their local areas.
Unfortunately, as officers explained a trial scheme is proposed, and probably due to the long term calls from myself and wife Jackie, Newton Abbot has been selected for that trial. Many have requested and supported this call; many councillors clearly feel that their area should have been chosen for the trial, which shouldn’t be too much longer in starting….
Things have been held up over the months by opposition from some Newton Abbot Town Councillors, but hopefully, they are now coming round to seeing the benefits of lower speed limits. Basically, if you get hit by a car doing 30 plus mph, you are likely to be dead. If you get hit at 20 mph, your chances of survival are hugely more.
Evidence from all over the world (including the UN) and all over the country screams out that this action saves lives and serious life-threatening injuries. Some County councillors questioned the need for a trial as the available evidence is simply overwhelming. While it’s a great pity that some local councillors do not accept the available evidence, others ( myself and my wife very much included) hope early progress can be made.
