Newton Abbot – Exeter Rail Line: The Future…

by admin on 3 April, 2018

The long term future of the Newton Abbot to Exeter rail line is of critical importance to the economy of the south west, and most certainly to the immediate area it serves. Local Devon County Councillors attended a briefing from Network Rails Julie Gregory last week. Numerous questions were asked, including one from yours truly. Basically I asked, seeking assurances, how long would Network Rail continue to invest in maintaining the line, particularly as the impact of climate change becomes ever more apparent? I wasn’t aware of course that again this week end the service along that line would be interrupted by the weather, as huge waves again battered the line. We all want to see the line retained/maintained/enhanced, so let’s not get the wrong end of any stick….but, at the meeting it was reported that a sum in the region of £70 million has been invested since the huge damage of 2014. I asked if there was a point when Network Rail would say, “Enough is enough”, and it no longer becomes economically viable to continue investing. The room seemed to be reassured by the comment from Network Rails spokesperson that Network Rail will maintain the line “at least til the end of the 21st century”. Well, perhaps…and yes I certainly hope such a proud boast can be substantiated, come the time. In my opinion the line is safe for as long as it “pays it’s way”, as long as it is seen to be worth investing in, but at some stage someone is going to be faced with a major decision. The £70m recently invested will be as nothing compared to the sums required to keep that line open “til the end of the century” ( and beyond.) In my opinion, open minds are needed as well as open lines….we are beginning to see the slow but steady impact of climate change. All alternatives should be kept “on the table”, and it’s no good saying that no alternatives exist….they always do!

We need an inland route! The Duch put their new lines next to major roads motorways OK I know the Netherlands is flat but they have also done some serious tunnelling . Also tunnels under Antwerp and …………er London (which I think is in England).

I am in full agreement with all you say, and the truth of that will become more not less clear as the years pass. London does of course have quite an extensive rail network underground, which is currently being significantly extended.
