Devon and Somerset Fire Authority Awards Ceremony: Give Praise and Thanks When and Where It’s Due

by admin on 14 September, 2018

I attended the Annual Awards ceremony of the Fire Authority in Taunton last evening, in my capacity as its newest member. A large number of awards were presented for various achievements including long service and acts of outstanding heroism. When called out to an incident the firefighter has no knowledge of what awaits; it could be anything from a cat stuck up a tree to a multiple motorway collision or large scale fire, with all the associated dangers.  It is quite right to hold such events and celebrate dedicated and professional service; it is quite right, indeed desirable that praise and thanks are shown to those who serve their communities in whatever capacity. The Government clearly does all it can to undermine morale and gives the appearance of seriously undervaluing the public sector.

So many in the blue light services feel undervalued and yet these are dedicated professionals doing a great job. The police fall into the same category, and I could just as easily include paramedics and teachers. There are subtle differences of course. The police know they are dealing with a criminal fraternity and anticipate much of the violence and unpleasantness that sadly but inevitably comes their way. Paramedics and nurses ( particularly in A and E ) far too often have to endure the same; it’s a pity therefore that these community heroes in all guises do not receive the credit, praise and recognition they earn and deserve. None of that is to say that if and when a public servant fails to deliver or falls below an acceptable level of performance they should not be held to account, of course they should, but let’s take every opportunity to give thanks and praise where it’s due. That was the whole point of last evening and I was pleased to be there to applaud the many who were recognised for their service. One can only hope that Government will recognise the need to suitably reward sooner rather than later.
